Michael,
Depends on the hub. Mavic needs oil if it gets too noisy, or starts to squeal. Most other hubs need a little oil once a year at most. The books say to tilt the bike on it's side and drip mineral oil through the hub. If you are like me, I just let my favorite tech at my local shop do an annual tune up for whatever they charge, and the hub maintenance is included(if you ask).
